How to Find a Business For Sale

Looking for a business for sale?  If you know me, you know I love to buy businesses so I have put in a lot of research to find the best sites that have lists of businesses for sale.  Whether you are looking for an online business for sale or a brick and mortar business for sale, here are a few of my favorite sites.

How to Buy a Business

A good friend once told me that when he buys a business, he looks at 1000 sets of financials for every 1 business he buys.  If you want to buy a business, you need to find the needle in the haystack to be successful.  To start, bookmark and sign up for your favorite business for sale websites from the list.  Put a notification to look through these businesses for sale every week.

Once you find a company for sale that looks interesting, reach out to the business broker and ask for more information.  The business broker will send you a stand NDA, simply sign this and send it back.  I use a virtual assistant to fill out my NDA’s because it saves me time.  After you sign the NDA for the business for sale, the business broker will send you a Confidential Information Memorandum (CIM).  The CIM has all the business details like financials, competition, business model, staff, etc.  This will give you a behind the scenes look at the business to see if it is a fit.

Online Business for Sale

Here is a list of the best places to find an online business for sale.  While brick and mortar business for sale listings seem to be spread across the web, online businesses for sale seem to have an exclusive broker and website for their listing.  Some of these online business brokers have really good, established online businesses for sale while some are more of just domain names or semi-spammy businesses.

Brick and Mortar Businesses for Sale

Most of the sites on this list have both online business for sale and brick and mortar businesses for sale.  A lot of them will also have franchises for sale.  I find these sites more of bulk listings of companies for sale.  Get creative with the search tool on these and you will find a great business for sale.

Franchises for Sale

Here is a list of franchises for sale that I often browse through.  I have never invested in a franchise but I have a handful of friends who have been successful when they buy a franchise.  Buying a franchise is a safer and easier than starting a business from scratch however it does also limit your upside.  Most franchises for sale will also be brick and mortar business so you don’t have the scale that an online business for sale would have.
